Combo #131 (Lara Wineman)

Lens:  Jane
Film:  C-Type Plate
Flash: off

"Through my work with a charity, africanwellfund.org, I went to West Africa to visit some of the water projects we have funded. Our travels took us to both Togo and Benin.

When choosing a film and lens combo I wanted something that could really represent the ambiance of the parts of the country I saw - the gritty and dusty, the struggle, the hope,… I've been a huge fan of the Jane Lens the last couple of months because I like the way it balances color and contrast so I thought I would pair it up with C-Type Plate which keeps the contrast though desaturates the color. Somehow, to me, it made the photos more dramatic, the desperation of those trying to survive but also the celebration of children with such overwhelming enthusiasm.

The parts of the countries I saw were not 'gorgeous' in a traveller sense but I really think the imperfections of the film and vague color let some of the not so obvious beauty be discovered."
