iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus?

By on September 11, 2014

iPhone6_official_02Within the next two weeks, two new iPhones will be launched. While rumours of an XL version have been going around, I was surprised to see the iPhone 6 Plus. Too small to be an iPad, yet too large to be an iPhone, I’m a bit baffled by its size. I thought the same thing as everyone else: "will it fit in the pocket of my jacket or jeans?"

A larger screen is, of course, an obvious advantage for photography. There is the added benefit of having a better view of what you’re shooting, and, immediately getting a clearer picture of what you’ve actually shot. I’m regularly disappointed by pictures that looked good on my iPhone but turn out to be rather a let down by what appears on my iMac screen. The other bonus of the 6 Plus is that it is the only iPhone with an optical stabilizer, which allows for sharper pictures regardless of the circumstances.

iPhone6_official_01With that said, won’t an iPhone of that size be a bit inconvenient in some cases? I’m thinking of street photography, in particular, which calls for a certain amount of discretion. I’m kind of struggling with the idea of whether I actually want an iPhone of this size.

I also wonder if the slightly bigger screen of the iPhone 6 (4,7") is worth it. But, ain’t it pretty? ;-)

All of this leaves me with an awful lot of questions, as I wasn’t invited by Apple to the keynote and wasn’t able to actually hold either of the two new models. So, my questions remained unanswered… until this morning, when I discovered a helpful arts and craft site that I am about to share with you.

Arts and Crafts workshop anyone?

Firstly, head on over to arstechnica.com. They were nice enough to produce a document with templates of the iPhone 5S, 6 and 6 Plus. All you need to do is download the PDF and print it out. Make sure to deactivate the "Fit to Page" option on your printer and PRINT!

Secondly, glue the A4 page to a piece of solid cardboard and cut out the templates of the 6 and 6 Plus. This does not take into account the weight of the phones, clearly, but it does accurately represent the size.

To be honest, I still don’t know if I’m going to give in to either. I have an iPhone 5S and think I might skip the 6, but if you still have a 4S, this might be the time to upgrade. The 6 Plus is still quite nice to hold, but it feels like holding a mini version of the iPad mini.

You will make up your own mind, but I have decided to not watch the official video again, because I think it’s just too tempting! How can anyone resist the urge? My thanks go out to Apple for complicating my life… ;-)
