Combo #214 (Matthew Wylie)

Lens:  Lowy
Film:  Blanko Bl4
Flash: off

"The Lowy Pak combo is the most difficult combo I have used.  It is generally horrible in artificial light, the lens does not focus as quickly as other Hipstamatic lenses do, which complicates 'from the hip' attempts, and if you have too many yellow or brown hues in your composition, forget about it. However, it has become my go to combo for street photography in colour.  I love its borderless film and its pseudo-attempt at being an 'unfiltered' filter. If you are patient with it and gracefully experiment, it can produce some special, 'no frills/gimmicks images' - the types of images that I would bet have a better chance of surviving the 'aesthetic test of time' than other combos. Works best in sunlight with turquoise, pink, and orange hues - and when chasing the light, but you have to stop and steady yourself in order to catch it. Good luck!"
Matthew Wylie

Combo #237 (Matthew Wylie)

Lens:  Burke
Film:  BlacKeys SuperGrain
Flash: off

"This combo is a welcome saving grace in terms of the b and w film lover's ability to work with what we have in the limited b and w combos that are offered by Hipstamatic. 'The Chalkboard Combo' offers a super gradient balance between the beloved John S/BlacKeys SuperGrain and G2/BlacKeys SuperGrain, with those wonderfully nuanced AO DLX highlights of stark white contrasts. It's the most successful combo I have found with Hipstamatic and in black/white for non-natural light situations, particularly subways, where the trams are likely to be metallic, etc. Imagine a blank chalkboard, and write on it anything you wish. This is that combo. "

Combo #249 (Sheldon Serkin)

Lens:  Akira
Film:  Blackeys Extra Fine
Using:  Oggl

"With Akira's high contrast complementing BlacKeys Extra Fine's fine grain, this combo joins my other irreplaceable combos - John S/BlacKeys Supergrain, G2/AO DLX, and Lowy/US1776 - for black and white street photography."
Sheldon Serkin

Combo #259 (Nicola Casamassima)

Lens:  G2
Film:  Uchitel 20
Flash: off

"I don't live in Rome but I do tend to visit quite often. The summer heat is usually unbearable and getting around the city is a nightmare. Fortunately, during the two days I was there, it rained overnight which cooled everything down nicely. This made it possible to enjoy long walks, during which I captured these tourists taking pictures of the monuments and the Romans walking their dogs. I really like this particular combo because of the autumnal, retro atmosphere it produces."
Nicola Casamassima

Combo #281 (Julia Nathanson)

Lens:  Madalena
Film:  Blanko BL4
Using:  Oggl

"I love the way this lens/film combo mutes the darker elements, and highlights what's left behind. Objects seem to be floating; people take on an artificial appearance. These photos were taken in and around the neighborhood where I live in Toronto."
Julia Nathanson

Combo #293 (Julia Nathanson)

Lens:  Lincoln
Film:  Blanko 1
Using:  Oggl

"A succession of grey fall days led me to this vivid combo. The hyper-saturation of Lincoln combined with the painterly highlights of Blanko 1 allow colours to pop even on a gloomy Toronto afternoon. I will have to find a good combo for the snow that is falling on us now. I'm not ready for this weather!"
Julia Nathanson
