"For this series, I was inspired by the light and the symbolism of old paintings, mainly the Dutch painters. Their paintings with the smooth/soft light spilling through the windows are so very delicious for the eyes. The Hipstamatic filters and the light of a window give me the tools to create my own 'painterly' images."

"While working on this project, I came across a quote from Franz Kafka’s "The Metamorphosis" where Gregor, the main character, wakes from uneasy dreams to find himself transformed into an insect. This had me thinking about how removed from the life of an insect our existence is and dreaming about how my little courtyard garden might appear to be an entire world to something so small. I often photograph botanicals found in my garden and relish the time taken to try to capture a "personality". Living among the botanicals are many insects, happily getting on with their own business, so I conscripted them to be the subject of my series and to try to capture some of their personality as well."

"The title of this series, "Pile Poil" refers to one of those untranslatable French expressions meaning "on point" or "on the mark". "Pile" comes from "heads-or-tails" when tossing a coin and "[au] poil" is attributed to the XIXth century portraitists who were meant to reproduce the faces of people “without a hair (poil) out of place”… The fusion of both indicates a notion of extreme precision.
In this series, the bristles of the brushes are inhabited by all sorts of small animals. The animals seem to be living in perfect harmony within their fuzzy habitats, depicting our everyday lives on another scale, a journey into the minuscule!
This had led me to fall in love with a duster (the giraffe picture)."

"The artist is the confidant of nature, flowers carry on dialogues with him through the graceful bending of their stems in the harmoniously tinted nuances of their blossoms. Every flower has a cordial word which nature directs towards him." August Rodin

"I have always been drawn to the inherent sensual beauty of flowers and Spring is the season this love affair blossoms. Maybe it is due to the dearth of blooms during the long winter months, but it has become clear that I awaken anew along with the daffodils."
Kathleen Magner Rios
