"Sayulita is a village on Mexico’s Pacific coast. It is a tranquil fishing village with a thriving hipster-surfer scene. The dirt streets are populated by children selling souvenirs, tourists driving golf carts and stray dogs. Lots of stray dogs. On the edge of town is an ornate cemetery that leads to Playa Los Muertos- The Beach of the Dead. A vibrant visual destination."

For the duration of two weeks, this is the beating heart of the Film Festival! A true cinema decor where you will encounter stars, eccentrics as well as the real Cannois."

"In 2014, I stayed with the Xukuru Indians in Pernambuco, Brazil, for 5 weeks. One of the reasons I visited them was because I am fascinated by the re-identification of the indigenous peoples and the Xukuru are among them. After five centuries of repression by the colonizers, who violently repressed their culture and religion, the Xukuru are in the process of reviving and restoring what has been lost.
I have photographed 300 individual Xukuru with my iPhone, and I used only the Hipstamatic app. I chose the Tinto 1884 beforehand, because I wanted to emphasize this ambivalence: this mix of the modern with the traditional; the old with the new, and by doing so, raise the question: What is authentic? What is fake? Is this ‘re-identification’ possible or is their ‘authentic’ culture definitely and irreversibly lost? Or are these people creating a new kind of identity; fit for the 21st century?"

"Each year, on December 12th, the day of the 'Virgin of Guadalupe' is celebrated, as part of the traditions of the Catholic Church. That day several processions dance and sing 'La Guadalupana' and pray on their way to the basilica or sanctuary. The celebration has become one of the most important traditional festivals in Mexico."

"You come across all sorts of people along the Croisette, during the Festival, when Cannes acquires a joyous air of Venice Beach. For the first time, I was lucky enough to climb the stairs for the viewing of “The Meyerowitz Stories” by Noah Baumbach, where I got a picture of Dustin Hoffman."

"The Cannes Film Festival is basically 10 days of madness for those who work there, as well as for those visiting and partying. It’s a heady mix of energetic workers, star-struck fans, curious onlookers, tourists, scantily clad young women, extravagance, money, alcohol and, of course, Stars. Every single year, for the brief space of an enchanted interlude, the Red Carpet, the Golden Palm and all the other dream-provoking symbols associated with the Festival, attract the gaze of the entire world."
Hélène Hache
