REMIX Runner-Up: Matthew Wylie
From abstractions to still-life to gritty street scenes, Matthew Wylie stands out as a versatile image maker. Whether making use of splashes of color or capturing monochrome scenes with punchy contrast, the true pleasure in Matthew’s work, though, is the inescapable touch of narrative. A scene is not merely a scene… It is a story. And so I present to you a story in 28 parts: Make Beautiful February by Matthew Wylie.

"I thought the Remix idea sounded really cool from the start and found it such an interesting initiative and exercise in creativity. Unfortunately, due my schedule at the time, I couldn’t devote enough attention to shooting anew for Remix, but I wanted to participate in some way. So, I chose my favourite month of February to at least attempt a backwards process of finding an image already taken and applying it to the theme. This ended up being equally exciting to me in creative terms. In the past, I’ve approached some of the Make Beautiful themes in advance, attempting to catch a shot the day of that embodied the day’s particular theme. That, in itself, is a fun process. But this other method – of digging back through past images and applying them to themes was interesting because it made me reconsider the way the original image could be seen, or ‘read.’"
