"Woman and the Sea"
"After walking through the eucalyptus groves in the beautiful 'Natural Bridges State Beach Park' in California (to see the winter home of thousands of monarch butterflies), we headed to the beach where this photo was taken.
I was standing close to the shore to photograph the natural bridge rock formation that juts up into the sky. It is a dramatic place, where the Pacific Ocean crashes loudly against the bridge's foundation. There were many pelicans along the coast (and on the natural bridge) due to the abundance of mackerel fish in the area, we were told.
As I was taking photos of the rock formation, a woman came as if from nowhere almost directly into my 'frame'. I was struck by her posture which embodied how I felt… so humbled by the power and magnificence of the sea, grateful for the warmth and radiance of the light… and happy to be alive… in that place at that moment.
As the sun was so bright and the glare off the water was so strong, it was difficult to see exactly what I was taking a picture of. Afterwards, I was surprised to discover the soaring pelicans over her head. The Jolly Rainbo 2X flash helped to accentuate the contrast between the dark sea and the landscape with the wave's white sea foam."
