The Kreuzberg HipstaPak

By on September 6, 2016

Welcome to Berlin and, more specifically, Kreuzberg, a vibrant hub for counter-culture. Needless to say this is an area that is favored by artists, with lots of bars and swanky lofts.

The Kreuzberg HipstaPak contains a lens, Johannes and a film, Strausberg. The effects are rather stunning, but we’ll leave you to judge…

Johannes produces a half-tone effect and this is new for Hipstamatic. Here’s some technical info: halftone is the reprographic technique that simulates continuous tone imagery through the use of dots, varying either in size or in spacing, thus generating a gradient-like effect. Where continuous tone imagery contains an infinite range of colors or greys, the halftone process reduces visual reproductions to an image that is printed with only one color of ink, in dots of differing size (amplitude modulation) or spacing (frequency modulation). This reproduction relies on a basic optical illusion: the tiny halftone dots are blended into smooth tones by the human eye. Just as color photography evolved with the addition of filters and film layers, color printing is made possible by repeating the halftone process for each subtractive color—most commonly using what is called the "CMYK color model" (source).

The Strausberg film adds a dash of "old newspaper" effect. Well worth testing with other lenses!

Please note! The Kreuzberg HipstaPak is specifically designed for the Hipstamatic 320 version; the newest version, which was released Thursday September 1st, so you’ll have to upgrade first. Every update means that Hipstamatic improves but these developments also imply a few limitations and the properties of this new pak are designed only for 320. You can find an article about the new 320-version here, along with a tutorial about the "Settings" section.

I haven’t been able to test the new pak myself, but I’ll be publishing a few examples of pictures taken with the Kreuzberg HipstaPak, later this week.

The playing field is open… so go ahead, tag your pictures with #hipstography and show us what you come up with! Happy shooting!
