"Every year, Brisbane hosts the Ekka (short for 'exhibition'), a huge event where the city gets to meet the countryside and have old-fashioned, family-friendly fun. People flock to the Ekka to see award-winning ducks and chickens, sample Queensland-grown food and Queensland-brewed drinks and watch traditional competitions, such as wood-chopping competitions, which are a lot of fun. Needless to say, there’s also a fair, which boasts an interesting mix of very traditional attractions and ultra-modern ones. It’s a photographer’s delight – a riot of colours and shapes just waiting to be recorded for posterity.
These were some of the first Hipstamatic photos I ever took, and being inexperienced with the app, I stuck to the most unoriginal of combinations: John S and Ina’s 1969. As it happened, this was a good choice, as John S’s contrast and vividness really brought out the eye-popping colours of the fair. I’m rather pleased with the results…"
