Part 2: The Portfolios of the Year

A portfolio is, in fact, akin to a storybook; sometimes moving, at other times mysterious, often funny and occasionally even disquieting. It often arises from pure creativity, a desire to record facts or, simply, to document our everyday reality. In 2014, Hipstography published 70 portfolios and here are the 5 series that made it through.

"This is a still life series in which it was important for me to photograph with minimal equipment: white paper, the light through a window, and an iPhone. This minimal approach brings the objects more cleanly into focus. I love to photograph fruits, vegetables and so on, and the Blanko 1 film is perfect to reduce them to form and color - one of my favorite films."

"I have been working as a photojournalist for the past 25 years at Agence France-Presse. I have covered major international events such as the Olympic Games and football world cups... At present, though, what I most enjoy photographing is the beautiful people crowd/celebrities, which I do when covering the various film festivals such as Cannes; such photos obviously require a more portrait-like approach. I love the photographic work of Richard Dumas, Lise Sarfati, Bettina Rheims, Dave Burnett, without forgetting Emanuele Scorcelletti.
Despite the advent of digital photography, for the past ten years I have continued to shoot analogue with my Rolleiflex 6x6 and my Holga. However, a year ago I discovered the new world of Hipstamatic and my life changed!!! What joy, what bliss!!! Everything is done to encourage creativity and this is just the beginning!!!!"

Favorite Flash: Never use it

"Sharing photos on the web is how I learned everything I know about photography and the app related culture in mobile photography. As a visual artist, I have always been interested in cinema. I have had a strong enthusiasm for film since I was a teenager – with this uncontrollable need to see every film I could. As such, I developed a passion for many filmmakers, especially those from the classic Hollywood era and the more art-oriented Europeans from the 50s and 60s. My interests in black and white photography have a strong relation to my love of these films, and Hipstamatic plays a huge role in letting me achieve the mood and aesthetic that I am so keen of. Nowadays, I rarely see a movie, but I take photos almost every day. I like everything about photography, but it has only been in the last year that I discovered street photography. The uncertainty I feel every time I go out shooting is thrilling and not knowing what I will discover or where will I end my walks is inspiring. The best part of all this is being out on the streets, meeting people and their stories or just observing urban life. There is a strange beauty in candid pictures that is difficult for me to explain, but it is what matters to me and is why I do what I do with the camera these days."

"I've always been drawn to aesthetics, and there are few things more pleasing than flowers. Soft, lovely, delicate. There is something so divinely feminine about them. They bring out my inner-child. They remind me to be a lady. They encourage me to embrace the moment. Flowers are wild and free, and I truly, with all my heart and soul, love them."
